Chief Mazer started in law enforcement as a Sheriff's cadet with the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office in 1991. While attending Diablo Valley College, he worked as a police cadet in the Pinole Police Department and the Lafayette Police Department.

Sworn in as a Solano County Deputy Sheriff in July 1996, he worked as a patrol officer, Field Training Officer (FTO), Marine Patrol Officer, Transport Officer, Court Bailiff, and Criminal Detective. As a deputy, he also had collateral duties as a Hazmat Specialist and founding member of the countywide inter-agency Hazmat Team and the Mobile Field Force.

He was promoted to Sergeant in 2011 and assigned as a patrol supervisor with a collateral assignment leading the Crisis Negotiations Team. In 2013, he was assigned to the Office of Emergency Services. While there, he created the Sheriff's Cadet Program, which brings youth ages 14-20 into the Sheriff's Office to learn about law enforcement and public service careers. He also began the Solano Countywide Cadet Academy, a multi-day live-in intensive training academy for youth interested in law enforcement careers.

In 2015, Mazer was promoted to Sheriff's Lieutenant and assigned to the Coroner's Office. As a Lieutenant, he also managed County Animal Control, the Transportation Bureau, Court Security, Marine Patrol, and Civil deputies. As a collateral duty, he served as the Countywide Commander for the Solano Mutual Aid Mobile Field Force and created the Sheriff's Peer Support Team. The Peer Support Team supports employees' mental health and critical incident stress resiliency and connects those employees in need of counseling with culturally competent licensed clinicians.

In April of 2021, he was appointed Chief of Police for the Rio Vista Police Department, a Sheriff's contract police service. In Rio Vista, he has managed the restart of the Police Chaplain program and the Police Cadet program.
