Janith currently serves on the Rio Vista City Council after being elected in 2008 to a four-year term. As City Councilmember she serves on the following boards and committees: Association of Bay Area Government, Solano Economic Development Corporation Board, Solano Transportation Association Board, Travis Regional Armed Forces Committee, and Yolo/Solano Air Quality Board. In 2009 Janith was appointed Honorary Commander to the 6th Air Refueling Squadron at Travis Air Force Base to serve a two-year term.
Prior to her service on the City Council, Janith served as Rio Vista Airport Commissioner, Rio Vista Waterfront Plan Steering Committee member, Vineyard Bluffs Homeowner Association President, Fairfield Community Service Commissioner, Fairfield Community Service Foundation member, and Soroptimist member. For over 20 years, Janith worked in the court system. Her career history includes employment at the United States District Court, Solano County Superior Court, and Alameda County Superior Court where she retired as a court reporter. Janith is also a United States Army Veteran. She was born in New York and came to California after receiving an honorable discharge from the U. S. Army in 1981. She has lived in Solano County for close to 30 years. Janith and her husband Gerald moved to Rio Vista in 2003 with their daughter Candace.
Presently, Janith teaches at Los Medanos College as an adjunct professor in the Business Department. The high value she places on education is evident in both her professional and personal life. She continues to diligently work on her dissertation to complete the Educational Leadership Doctoral program at Saint Mary’s College. Her research examines the effects of parental involvement on academic achievement. Recently she was appointed Communication Director for the Research on Women and Education Special Interest Group - American Association for Educational Research. She is an active member of the American Educational Research Association and volunteers as a reviewer of research proposals. Janith earned a Master in Public Administration from California State University, Hayward and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management with Honors from Saint Mary’s College of California. She is a member of the Honorary Society of Public Affairs and Administration.
Janith’s community spirit and love for people is obvious. She routinely greets people with a bright smile and a warm hug. Communication and transparency in government is very important to Janith. In an effort to keep others informed, she writes a bi-weekly column called The Agenda for the two local newspapers where she informs the public of the actions taken during the City Council meetings and of relevant information about the actions of the committees on which she serves.
